There is considerable debate over where plastic is actually made. The World Economic Forum’s 2017 report on the state of the world’s forests found that, while China had made great strides in reducing its deforestation rate, the majority of plastic waste was created elsewhere. The report classifies plastics as “trans-boundary materials”, meaning that not only do they originate from different countries but often circulate between them for a variety of reasons.
Is Plastic Made in China? #
There is a lot of plastic made in China. But is all of it made there? The answer is not so easy to determine.
Some products that are labeled "made in China" may only have some of their components made in that country. It can be difficult to ascertain where all the parts and materials come from on certain products.
This issue came to light in 2007 when a group of Chinese students took apart a Dell laptop computer and found that most of the parts were made in other countries, including the United States.
The same could be said for plastic products. While some items may be completely manufactured in China, others may only have certain elements produced there.
In conclusion, it appears that much of the plastic we consume is made in China. While this may not be ideal, it is important to be aware of the sources of our plastic and take steps to reduce our reliance on this material. Let's work together to find sustainable solutions to our plastic problem and protect our planet for future generations.
